EllaLuzella Bakery began as a love letter to the women who shaped my life long before I ever imagined owning a bakery. My name is Lisa and my grandmothers, Ella and Luzella,  Mississippi natives whose kitchens were filled with the aromas of warm cakes, bubbling pies, and perfectly seasoned dishes that drew family, friends, and neighbors to their tables. Their food wasn’t just delicious—it was a source of comfort, celebration, and connection.

Growing up in Chicago, I spent hours at their sides, absorbing their wisdom and watching how effortlessly they turned simple ingredients into something extraordinary. Baking became the heartbeat of our family. My parents and younger brother joined in, making cookies for our elementary school teachers, learning early that homemade gifts carry a special kind of joy.

That lesson stayed with me. During my college years, when money was tight, I returned to baking—crafting oatmeal cookies as Christmas gifts for friends and family. Those cookies became so beloved that even after I graduated and could afford store‑bought presents, people asked, “Where are the cookies?” Their disappointment made me realize that what I created in the kitchen meant more than anything I could buy.

As life moved forward, baking became my refuge. I baked with Grandma Luzella for holidays, experimented with new recipes, and eventually mastered the pound cakes and cookies that would one day define my bakery. The moment Grandma Ella tasted my oatmeal cookies and said they were the best she’d had, I felt a spark—an affirmation that the love and skill passed down through generations had taken root in me.

EllaLuzella Bakery was born from two women, families and legacies carried forward through time. Their spirits meet in every recipe I bake. Two women whose stories traveled through their hands and into mine.

Ella’s restaurant sat just outside Jackson, Mississippi, where the air was filled with the scent of soulful, well‑seasoned dishes and the warmth she folded into every meal. A devoted wife and mother of three, she cooked with a tenderness that could steady any heart. Her example taught her sons that food is never just food—it is intention, care, and love made visible.

Farther north, Luzella’s kitchen in Chicago told her story. She arrived from Quitman Mississippi during the Great Migration, with courage, creativity, and a willingness to begin again. A devoted wife and mother of five, she was known for unforgettable meals, cakes, pies, and cookies—each touched by her instinct to experiment and make something ordinary feel magical. Her children learned and loved her recipes, but more importantly, they learned her generosity.

EllaLuzella Bakery is my way of honoring them—continuing the traditions they built, the flavors they perfected, and the love they shared so freely. Every cake and cookie is a piece of their legacy, offered with the same warmth that filled their kitchens.
